Christian Andreas Doppler an Austrian physicist and mathematician had proposed the Doppler Effect in 1842. The Doppler Effect is a vital part of the Doppler radar system and thus the system was named after him.
Doppler was born in Salzburg in Austria and studied mathematics and astronomy in Salzburg and Vienna at the age of 39 he proposed the Doppler Effect principle which stated that the relative speed of the observer and the target is what influences the observed frequency of the wave. This principle was verified in 1845.
A Doppler radar makes uses of the Doppler Effect in order to produce velocity data about the objects that are at a distance. This is done by sending a microwave signal towards the desired object and the data is collected from the altered frequency of the signal that has been returned.
The history of radar can be traced back to 1886 when Heinrich Hertz showed the whole world that solid objects can reflect radio waves. However it was Robert Morris Page, an American physicist who was the major contributor to the development of the radar. Robert Page along with fellow scientists Leo C Young and Taylor developed the radar (Radio Detection And Ranging) system in 1934.
The Doppler radars are widely used in radiology, sounding satellites, police speed guns, air defense, air traffic controls and many other areas.
